Rehab Online – some more tweaks
Rehab Online has now been live for a month, and seems to be getting quite good traffic, as well as some really good feedback.
I am looking at some more tweaks to the search, to make it easier to use, and I’d appreciate some feedback from you.
We’ve made a couple of changes to the current advanced search page:
http://www.rehab-online.org.uk/advancedsearch.aspx
At the bottom we now offer the following options
Gender accepted:
Male /Male only
Female / Female only
This is my question:
Can you foresee any scenarios where you would select e.g. the “Female” as opposed to the “Female only” option? If you are looking for a project for a specific client, would you automatically select their gender as part of your search, or would this not occur to you? (just to give you an idea of the numbers, there are currently 17 male only projects and 5 female only projects, so the majority of the projects cater for both male and female service users).
On the advanced search, we have also added an “Alcohol only” option.
If you look at the homepage, we currently have checkboxes for “Drugs” and “Alcohol”. Would you use this when searching, or would you prefer to type in the area or town that you are searching for? Can you envisage any scenarios where you would also use this criteria on the homepage? Would it be helpful to add the “Alcohol only” option on the homepage too?
Many thanks!
Fiona

Hi Fiona,
I can in fact see a need for a ‘male only’ box, especially if someone has been the victim of domestic / sexual abuse and it would not be appropriate if mixed gender. Clearly you will have a better understanding than me of how many gender specific projects exist.
The same response really for the ‘alcohol only’ question, although clearly not SO crucial.
Thanks,
Andy
Thanks Andy
Hi Fiona,
I could see a place for these options. Some clients want a mixed setting, so a project that takes women but is not female only would be the right call. Other clients, both male and female, particularly want a single gender project, so I think the options you have created work.
On a completely different topic, the providers’ page, it would be very helpful to be able to see more lines of text rather than only 3 in the boxes for describing the service and what it offers – it would really help to be able to view what one is writing. I wonder, would it be possible for a selected box to expand while an entry is being made so that the provider can see the entirety of what they have written? It could then reduce again afterwards, to allow the current view of a number of different boxes.
Thanks a lot,
Fiona
Hi Fiona
Thanks for your feedback.
We’ll review the providers’ page and see if there is anything we can do to improve it.

I had this comment from Kathrine at Foundation 66:
I think the ability to select single gender projects is good for care managers who may be working with victims of domestic violence, which tends to be one of the influencing factors for single sex choices.
Alcohol only option is still relevant I think for your traditional older drinkers who may not want to go to a mixed drugs and alcohol unit, also so few specialist alcohol places it would be good to highlight them in some way as they are still very much needed.
