Simple search on the homepage
You’ve already come back to me with some suggestions on the advanced search – thanks very much for your input.
I would value some thoughts around the search on the homepage. We have been debating this internally, specifically around how this might offer the option to search by type of treatment.
My questions are:
1. Should we add 2 checkboxes underneath the search box for “drugs” and “alcohol”?
AND/OR
2. Should we keep the “type of treatment” free text search?
I guess I’m really asking what would you put in for “type of treatment” if you had the option to search? A philisophy of care? Drugs? Alcohol? or something totally different?
Is it really meaningful to offer this as an option, or does it make more sense to keep it within the advanced search and at the simple search stage, just offer 2 checkboxes for “drugs” and “alcohol”?

I would keep it simple – the two check boxes I think are fine but it is essential that they cab BOTH be selected at the same time in order to account for the high number of people who are poly users.
Yes I am quite happy with two check boxes, I suppose you could put a third for poly. but I think it would complicate matter too much
Regarding the types of treatment, there are many philosophies and perhaps just generalise. I think keep it simple is the best idea.
I am happy with two check boxes as well, as long as someone can enter both drugs and alcohol.
Type of treatment probably does need to be a free text search. What people put in is going to depend on who they are and what previous experience or understanding they have of treatment. Some people will probably only put in something like ‘Rehab’ and their location, others will know what they are after and be able to be very specific, the search needs to meet the needs of both types of user and everyopne in the middle
I think the search needs to be as simple as possible to access. I would therefore stick with just a search bar for the simple search. If the website is aimed at individual’s looking for support their expectation will be to be able to simply enter the type of support they are looking for. If the choice is between two boxes, if both boxes are ticked the user will have to provide more detail to narrow down any search results which adds another step in the process.
2 check boxes is good for me too, but I agree that we need to be able to tick them both. More detailed information can be obtained from the Advanced search option.

Sorry for the delay, I agree with most other people by the looks of it. Two tick boxes (both tickable) will suffice I think, if a third is at all necessary it would have to be for an in-house detox facility but again that could feature in the results thrown up by the search option.
